What exactly is a retainer, and how crucial is it to wear one? Retainers are designed to uphold the orthodontic alignment achieved for your teeth. If you neglect to wear your retainer, there's a likelihood that your teeth may shift back to their original positions. In such cases, correction could become challenging, if not impossible.
Retainers will be provided to you upon the completion of the active treatment phase, immediately following the removal of your braces. You might receive either a clear plastic or metal removable retainer, a fixed retainer, or in certain instances, both types.
The duration of retainer wear is influenced by your initial teeth alignment before starting orthodontic treatment. Typically, you'll be recommended to wear a removable retainer for a minimum of 12 months or more. Initially, it may be worn consistently, eventually transitioning to nighttime wear.
our speech will be different. Practice speaking with the retainer in place e.g. read out loud at home on your own, and in this way your speech will return to normal within a couple of days. You may also find you produce more saliva and that you find yourself swallowing a lot to begin with. This is quite normal and will quickly pass.
A fixed retainer is a slender wire permanently affixed to the inner side of your front teeth. Your Orthodontist will guide you on maintaining the cleanliness of the fixed retainer, and it's important to be cautious with crunchy foods. Should any issues arise with the fixed retainer, kindly schedule an appointment with your Orthodontist for prompt assistance.
Yes, it is very important to keep regular appointments with your dentist and hygienist. Now that you are wearing retainers, it will be easier to check your teeth for decay. This is particularly so if your previous brace was fixed to the teeth.
Now that your teeth are straight, it is important to obtain a custom made mouthguard for playing any form of contact sports. We recommend you seek advice from your general dentist regarding appointments to have a mouth guard made. Removable retainers should be removed for all contact sports.
Please call the practice where you had your treatment as soon as reasonably possible. Do not wait for your next routine appointment, as your teeth may move while not wearing your retainers. If the retainer is lost or broken beyond repair, there will be a fee payable for patients.
